Ambassador Tilley also outlined Australia’s whole of economy approach to achieve Net Zero Plan for 2050, a goal shared by Vietnam with ambitious emissions reductions targets.
“Both Australia and Vietnam recognise the imperative to act now to combat climate change challenges. Our leaders recognise the importance of our two countries learning from each other and working together while creating new opportunities for our businesses and jobs for our people,” Ambassador Tilley said.
“Together we can build on the $94.5 million committed to supporting climate change adaptation in the Mekong, announced last year by our Foreign Minister Penny Wong,” she added.

Climate change is at the core of the recently upgraded Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) between Vietnam and Australia. In a joint statement in March on the elevation to CSP, the two countries commit to drawing on a range of Australia’s resources and domestic expertise in support of Viet Nam’s efforts to respond to the impacts of climate change.
Australia and Vietnam continue to explore opportunities for cooperation on climate action, carbon markets and in the green economy. The two countries will deepen collaboration on climate adaptation and resilience, especially in the Mekong Delta, including through the Mekong-Australia Partnership.
In 2023, Australia announced at the Vietnam-Australia Forum a new $94.5 million dollar support package for climate change adaption in the Mekong Delta from 2023 to 2034. The funding provides practical support to Vietnam’s climate adaptation and resilience efforts, and those of other countries throughout the broader Mekong Delta.
